SUMMARY:Joint Aquatics Sciences Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Collaboration among disciplines is critical to address common problems\, whether in wetlands\, streams\, lakes\, or oceans\, and to study these problems from an ecosystem perspective. Collaboration is also necessary to conduct translational research that delivers actionable results which support science-based solutions.  We encourage presentations that engage scientists\, practitioners\, and others from across the spectrum of the CASS members and embrace unique perspectives offered by our colleagues both inside and outside the organizations of CASS. We look forward to presentations exploring all aspects of aquatic science. \nThe Hybrid Conference Model\nOne important lesson from the pandemic has been the value of providing remote access to scientific meeting content.  This has allowed registrants broad access to the science\, not just the slim subset of presentations that they might have attended in a pre-pandemic live event.   JASM2022 will employ a hybrid meeting model to create an exciting in-person event but also provide for submission and access to content for those unable to travel to Grand Rapids.  Presenters and attendees will be able to access the core science content through the following formats:   \nLive-Streamed from Grand Rapids –  Plenary sessions and selected other events will be live streamed as well as recorded and available online.\nIn-person Presentations – All oral and poster presentations delivered in Grand Rapids will be pre-recorded and available online to all attendees.\nVirtual Presentations – Submissions of papers and posters by those unable to travel will be included as pre-recorded content and available for asynchronous viewing\nAbstracts for symposia and contributed oral/poster sessions can be submitted for either a live\, in-person or recorded\, virtual presentation.  All presenters  are required to provide a recorded version of their presentation prior to the meeting. The recorded presentations will be made available to all in-person and virtual attendees\, during and after the meeting. We will not be able to accommodate live\, remote presentations during the conference. Presentation guidelines and additional instructions will be provided in future correspondence.

As an environmentally benign and species-specific solution\, gene silencing technologies (GSTs) have a great potential of being applied to the control of invasive species such as Phragmites. This presentation will discuss recent progress made in GST development for pest species in general and summarize the R&D work carried out on Phragmites in particular by a consortium of government and academic labs.

In this webinar\, we will be featuring talks from two different researchers. \nFlooded Phragmites australis provides habitat for Great Lakes coastal wetland fishes\nPresented by: Melanie Croft-White\nPresentation Summary: The goal of this research was to determine how fish community composition\, diversity and abundance differs in Phragmites\, Typha and Schoenoplectus vegetation. We found that although there were no differences in species richness or abundance there were differences in the fish species composition between the three vegetation types\, with more Cyprinids found in the Schoenoplectus and more Centrarchids found in Phragmites \nMapping invasive Phragmites australis in Lake Erie wetlands (Canada) using multispectral satellite images\nPresented by: Prabha Rupasinghe\nPresentation Summary: Phragmites australis is one of the worst plant invaders in the wetlands of North America. Remote sensing is the most cost-effective method to track its spread given its widespread distribution and rapid colonization rate. This presentation will discuss new remote sensing-based approaches to quantify and monitor both high and low density Phragmites stands using moderate resolution Landsat 7/8 and Sentinel 2 and high-resolution WorldView 2/3 satellite images in Lake Erie wetlands of Canada.

DESCRIPTION:In our second webinar of the Great Lakes Phragmites Collaborative’s 2022 webinar series\, Amy Carrozzino-Lyon from University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and Brian Glenzinski from Ducks Unlimited\, share a research update on their work with wild rice restoration after Phragmites management. \nPresentation Description: The Green Bay west shore remains one of the last strongholds of Wisconsin’s coastal wetland habitat within the Lake Michigan basin. For nearly a decade\, a multi-agency restoration partnership has been working toward large scale management of non-native Phragmites and reintroduction of Manoomin (wild rice) at west shore priority wetlands. This presentation will summarize efforts\, successes\, and lessons learned through managing aquatic plants in this historically impaired and naturally dynamic ecosystem.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Michael J. McTavish is a Mitacs Elevate postdoctoral research fellow working with the Smith Forest Health Lab at the University of Toronto and Ducks Unlimited Canada. His current research includes biological control of non-native invasive plants (Phragmites and garlic mustard) and the ecology of non-native earthworms.” \nPresentation Description: Biological control or “biocontrol” of introduced Phragmites offers a self-sustaining\, target-specific\, and cost-effective tool to supplement existing management options. Since 2019\, a pilot program has been developing in Ontario\, Canada using the stem-boring moths Archanara neurica and Lenisa geminipuncta. This presentation will provide an update on the pilot program and explore priorities for future research.

DESCRIPTION:Upper Midwest Invasive Species Conference 2020 \nFor Program Information: https://www.umisc.net/program.html \nThe Upper Midwest Invasive Species Conference (UMISC) is a biennial conference that addresses all taxa of invasive species. In 2020\, UMISC will celebrate 12 years of connecting the invasive species management\, research\, and policy community. The goal of UMISC is to strengthen management of invasive species\, especially prevention\, control\, and containment. There have been great strides in invasive species research\, prevention\, and management\, but much work still must be done. The conference provides numerous opportunities to network with professionals\, land managers\, researchers\, nonprofits\, and others. Topics range from recruiting volunteers and identifying invasive species to manually removing invasive species and conducting prescribed fire burns\, and much more. \nUMISC also represents a strong partnership between its three hosts: Invasive Plants Association of Wisconsin\, Midwest Invasive Plant Network\, and Minnesota Invasive Species Advisory Council\, \nUMISC registration is open to anybody!
