Too often, outreach and education efforts are an afterthought tacked on to the end of a grant proposal. We’re too busy keeping up with on-the-ground efforts to take time for outreach, or perhaps it’s intimidating because education is outside of our normal purview, and we’re not quite sure how to be most effective. Mary Bohling of Michigan Sea Grant will share her experiences to demonstrate the importance of outreach and education, and show us concrete examples she has used as part of the Anchor Bay and St. Clair Flats Phragmites management project. These examples will include outreach to private landowners, schools, and others, as well as educational materials placed at treatment sites. Mary will showcase how the partnership between Michigan Sea Grant, Ducks Unlimited and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has resulted in a skilled team to improve Phragmites management from multiple angles.
